This collaborative observatory is located in the northern part of La Réunion island (Indian Ocean) within the watershed of Rivière des Pluies (45.0 km²) which hosts the TMCF of Plaines des Fougères, one of the best preserved natural habitats in La Réunion Island. Since 2015, the ERORUN-STAFOR monitoring in collaboration with local partners collected a multidisciplinary dataset with a constant improvement of the instrumentation over time. At the watershed scale and in its vicinity, the ERORUN-STAFOR observatory includes 10 measurement stations covering the upstream, midstream and downstream part of the watershed. The stations record a total of 48 different variables through continuous (sensors) or periodic (sampling) monitoring. The dataset consists of continuous time series variables related to (i) meteorology, including precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, net radiation, atmospheric pressure, cloud water flux, irradiance, leaf wetness and soil temperature (ii) hydrology, including water level and temperature, discharge and electrical conductivity (EC) of stream, (iii) hydrogeology, including groundwater level, water temperature and EC in two piezometers and one groundwater gallery completed by soil moisture measurements under the canopy. The dataset is completed by periodic time series variables related to (iv) hydrogeochemistry, including field parameters and water analysis results. The periodic sampling survey provides chemical and isotopic compositions of rainfall, groundwater, and stream water at different locations of this watershed. The ERORUN-STAFOR monitoring dataset extends from 2014 to 2022 with an acquisition frequency from 10 min to hourly for the sensor variables and from weekly to monthly frequency for the sampling. Despite the frequent maintenance of the monitoring sites, several data gaps exist due to the remote location of some sites and instrument destruction by cyclones. This observatory is a unique research site in an insular volcanic tropical environment offering three windows of observation for the study of critical zone processes through upstream-midstream-downstream measurements sites. Le jeu de données du premier observatoire du réseau français des observatoires de zones critiques (OZCAR) situé dans un contexte tropical et volcanique insulaire, intégrant une "Forêt de Nuages Tropicale de Montagne" (TMCF - Tropical Montane Cloud Forest) : L'observatoire ERORUN-STAFOR. Cet observatoire collaboratif est situé dans la partie nord de l'île de La Réunion (Océan Indien) au sein du bassin versant de la Rivière des Pluies (45,0 km²) qui abrite la TMCF des Plaines des Fougères, l'un des habitats naturels les mieux préservés de l'île de La Réunion. Depuis 2015, le suivi ERORUN-STAFOR en collaboration avec les partenaires locaux a permis de collecter un jeu de données pluridisciplinaires avec une amélioration constante de l'instrumentation au fil du temps. A l'échelle du bassin versant et à proximité, l'observatoire ERORUN-STAFOR comprend 10 stations de mesure couvrant l'amont, le milieu et l'aval du bassin versant. L'ensemble des données consiste en des séries temporelles continues de variables liées à (i) la météorologie, y compris les précipitations, la température de l'air, l'humidité relative, la vitesse et la direction du vent, le rayonnement net, la pression atmosphérique, le flux d'eau dans les nuages, l'irradiance, l'humidité des feuilles et la température du sol (ii) l'hydrologie, y compris le niveau et la température de l'eau, le débit et la conductivité électrique (CE) du cours d'eau, (iii) l'hydrogéologie, y compris le niveau des eaux souterraines, la température de l'eau et la CE dans deux piézomètres et une galerie d'eau souterraine complétée par des mesures de l'humidité du sol sous la canopée. L'ensemble des données est complété par des variables de séries temporelles périodiques liées à (iv) l'hydrogéochimie, y compris les paramètres de terrain et les résultats d'analyse de l'eau. L'étude d'échantillonnage périodique fournit des compositions chimiques et isotopiques des précipitations, des eaux souterraines et des cours d'eau à différents endroits de ce bassin versant. L'ensemble des données de surveillance d'ERORUN-STAFOR s'étend de 2014 à 2022 avec une fréquence d'acquisition allant de 10 minutes à une heure pour les variables des capteurs et d'une fréquence hebdomadaire à mensuelle pour l'échantillonnage. Malgré la maintenance fréquente des sites de surveillance, plusieurs lacunes dans les données existent en raison de l'éloignement de certains sites et de la destruction des instruments par les cyclones. Cet observatoire est un site de recherche unique dans un environnement volcanique tropical insulaire offrant trois fenêtres d'observation pour l'étude des processus de la zone critique grâce à des sites de mesure amont-milieu-aval. Cet ensemble de données à haute résolution est précieux pour évaluer la réponse des bassins versants et des aquifères volcaniques tropicaux à la fois à l'échelle de l'événement et à l'échelle du long terme (c.-à-d. le changement global). Il permettra également de progresser dans la compréhension du rôle significatif des TMCF dans les processus de recharge, le modèle conceptuel hydrogéologique des îles volcaniques, les réponses hydrosédimentaires des bassins versants aux événements climatiques extrêmes et leur évolution respective dans des conditions climatiques changeantes.
